Ruben se een minuut storie: Die wyse ou uil (nog 'n variasie)

Die wyse ou uil het in 'n groot eikeboom in 'n besige park gesit. Hy het daagliks só baie dinge gesien. Hy het gekyk hoe 'n jong seun 'n bejaarde man help om 'n swaar mandjie te dra, en 'n jong meisie wat op haar ma skree. Daar was ook 'n klein dogtertjie met krullerige hare wat 'n jong hondjie aan 'n leiband hanteer, terwyl sy en haar ma die hond gehoorsaamheid leer. Sit! Lê! Loop! Eet! Wat 'n plesier is die hondjie nie. Die dogtertjie geniet dit as die hond op haar opdragte reageer en vir die ander mense in die park lyk dit asof sy glad nie moeg raak van hierdie speletjie nie.

Terwyl die uil al hierdie gebeure dopgehou het, het hy sy bek toegehou en sy oë en ore oopgehou.

Met verloop van tyd het die uil al hoe meer gesprekke en stories gehoor. Hy het 'n vrou hoor vertel van hulle lawaaierige bure wat nie respek vir hul medemens het nie, en 'n man wat spog dat hy nooit 'n fout maak nie. Die ou uil het die wêreld om hom gesien en geweet dat sommige mense verbeter het terwyl ander slegter geword het. Maar ongeag wat hy gesien het, het hy net wyser geword met elke dag wat verbygaan.

Wat het ek uit hierdie storie geleer?

* Luister meer en praat minder.

* Deur meer oplettend te wees en minder te praat terwyl ons meer luister, kan ons wyser word. 

* Om ons omgewing in te neem en werklik te luister na wat ander te sê het, kan ons help om kennis en insig te verkry, met ander woorde leer van ander mense se kennis. 

* Om aandag te skenk aan die besonderhede kan ons 'n beter begrip van die wêreld gee en ons help om wyse besluite te neem.

We would like to remind you that magic words such as hello, please, you're welcome, I’m sorry, and thank you, all begin to be learned at home.

It’s also at home that children learn to be honest, to be on time, diligent, show friends their sympathy, as well as show utmost respect for their elders and all teachers.

 
Home is also where they learn to be clean, not talk with their mouths full, and how/where to properly dispose of garbage.

 
Home is also where they learn to be organized, to take good care of their belongings, and that it’s not OK to touch others.

 
Here at school, on the other hand, we teach languages, maths, history, geography, physics, accounting etc. We only reinforce the education that children receive at home from their parents.

One minute story: The Fox and the Stork

Once there was a Fox and a stork. The Fox was selfish but he decided to invite the stork for dinner. The Stork was extremely happy to be invited and she reached his house on time.

The Fox opened the door and invited her in. They sat on the table. The Fox served her some soup in shallow bowls. While the fox licked up his soup, the Stork couldn't drink it because she has a long beak and the bowl was too shallow.

The next day, the Stork invited the fox over for dinner. She served him soup as well but in two narrow vases. While the Stork enjoyed her soup and finished it, the fox went home very hungry realizing his mistake.

Moral of the story: Don’t be selfish because it will come back to you at some point.

Two minute story: The Emu and the Lyrebird

An emu and a lyrebird were friends. The emu was known for his strength and speed, while the lyrebird was known for his beautiful singing.

One day, the emu and the lyrebird were out for a walk when they came across a dangerous snake. The snake was about to attack the emu when the lyrebird sang a beautiful song that distracted the snake and allowed the emu to escape.

The emu was grateful and thanked the lyrebird for saving his life. The lyrebird, humble as always, said that it was his pleasure and that the emu would have done the same for him. The emu and the lyrebird learned that true friendship is based on mutual respect and support.

The moral of The Emu and the Lyrebird story is: True friends are always there for each other, and that everyone has unique strengths and talents that can help others.

One minute story: The wolf and the seven little goats

A mother goat has seven little goats. She must leave them home alone while she goes out to find food, so she warns them to be careful and not to let anyone in.

While the mother goat is away, a wolf comes to the door and tries to trick the little goats into opening the door and letting him in. The little goats, remembering their mother’s warning, refuse to open the door. The wolf gets angry and tries to break down the door, but the little goats are able to hold it shut.

The mother goat returns and sees the wolf trying to break down the door. She uses her clever wit to trick the wolf into falling into a pit and captures him. The little goats are safe, and they learn the importance of listening to their mother and being careful.

The moral of The wolf and the seven little goats story is: Listening to advice and being cautious can protect us from danger.

One minute story: The wolf in sheep’s clothing

This fable is about a mischievous wolf that decided to disguise himself as a sheep by wearing sheep skin or “sheep’s clothing.”

The disguise worked, and the farmer mistook the fox for a sheep, so much so that he slaughtered him.

This story with a moral lesson shows that if the mischievous wolf did not pretend to be someone or something, no that he is not, he would have not been killed by the farmer.

Two minute story: The old fable of the tortoise and the hare

Overconfidence will often be punished by embarrassing failure.

You know the old fable of the tortoise and the hare ...

Once upon a time a tortoise and a hare had an argument about who was faster.

They decided to settle the argument with a race. They agreed on a route and started off the race.

The hare shot ahead and ran briskly for some time. Then, seeing he was far ahead of the tortoise, he thought he’d sit down and rest for a while before continuing the race. He sat down under a tree and soon fell fast asleep.

The tortoise, plodding along, soon overtook him, passed him, crossed the finish line, and won the race.

The hare woke up and realized he’d lost.

Many people will conclude that Slow and Steady win the race. When I read the story, I feel that the real lesson is not about the tortoise at all, it’s about the hare.

The hare made a huge mistake, believing in it's ability but then not actually proving it. In real life, you may have that great skill, one which everyone agrees, but you must still showcase that skill to win the competition.

Moral: Success depends on using your talents, not just having them.

One minute story: Two friends and the bear

Once there were two friends who were crossing the jungle. After some time they saw a bear coming towards them.

Then, one of the friends quickly climbed the nearby tree and the other one did not know how to climb the tree. So he lays down on the ground holding his breath.

The bear reaches near him and sniffs him in the ear. After some time bear left the place, thinking the man is dead.

Now the other friend climbs down and asked his friend, what did bear said to him in his ear? He replied, "to be safe from the fake friends."

Moral: Beware of fake friends.

One minute story: The hunter and the pigeons

One day a hunter sets a net to catch birds and placed grains and rice over the net. After some time a flock of pigeons comes by and start eating grains and get caught in the net.

After some time they started losing hope, then their leader asks them to fly together up in the sky. They did as they were told and carried the net away.

The hunter runs after them but they flew away to their friend’s mouse hole. Then the mouse cuts the net and freed the pigeons.

Moral: Unity is strength.

One minute story: The crow and the peacock – Who is happy?

Once there was a crow who wishes to be colorful and beautiful like other birds. He then went to the parrot and shared his thoughts.

But parrot said peacock is most beautiful bird so talk to him. Then the crow went to the peacock and told him about his looks.

Then the peacock replied, "You are the luckiest bird that has been never caged in life and we because of our beauty stay caged, and you are always free."

After listening to this, crow realized his mistake and thanked God for making him like this and he flew away happily.

Moral: Never compare yourself to others. Be happy with what you have and what you are.

One minute story: Put down the negativity

When I first watched the video about the professor poured water into a glass, I expected him to ask the typical “glass half empty or glass half full” question. Instead, the professor asked, “How heavy is this glass of water?” Students shouted out answers ranging from eight gram to sixteen gram.

He replied, “The absolute weight of this glass doesn’t matter. It all depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute or two, it’s fairly light. If I hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make my arm ache a little. If I hold it for a day straight, my arm will likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop the glass to the floor. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to me.”

As the class shook their heads in agreement, he continued, “Your stresses and worries in life are very much like this glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache a little. Think about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed - incapable of doing anything else until you drop them.”

This is a true analogy for many millennials including myself. I want to remind ourselves to take a chill pill. I know dozens of people in their mid-20’s who are literally working away the best decade of life because they want to be a hustler and achieve financial freedom.

While there’s nothing wrong with working hard, you shouldn’t sacrifice your quality of life for a big paycheck.

Moral: It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses and worries. Live life!

Rights and responsibilities of a children and parents

Children's Act 38 of 2005 

Section 16: Responsibilities of children

Every child has responsibilities appropriate to the child's age and ability towards his or her family, community and the state. 

Section 18: Parental rights and responsibilities
The Children’s Act 38 of 2005 provides that a parent has the following rights and responsibilities towards his/her child:

* to care for a child;
* to keep contact with a child;
* to act as guardian of a child; and
* to contribute to the maintenance of a child.

Section 19: Parental responsibilities and rights of mothers
The biological mother of a child, whether married or unmarried, has full parental responsibilities and rights in respect of the child.

Section 20: Parental responsibilities and rights of married fathers

The biological father of a child has full parental responsibilities and rights in respect of the child: 
* If he is married to the child’s mother.
* If he was married to the child’s mother at the time of the child’s conception.
* He marries the mother at the time of the child’s birth.
* A marriage takes place at any time between conception and birth.

Section 21: Parental responsibilities and rights of unmarried fathers

The biological father of a child ... acquires full parental responsibilities and rights in respect of his child if he lives with the child's mother in a permanent life-partnership when the child is born.

He also acquires full parental responsibilities and rights if, regardless of whether or not he has ever lived with the child's mother, he consents or successfully applies to be identified as the child's father or pays damages in terms of customary law, and contributes or attempts in good faith to contribute to the child's upbringing and maintenance for a reasonable period.

One minute story: Be wise while counting

One day in Akbar’s court someone asked the question, "How many crows are there in the city?" No one had the answer. Birbal quickly replied "Four thousand three hundred and twelve." He was asked how did he know this?

Birbal said, "Send your man out to count the crows. If it is lesser than this number then some crows are visiting their families elsewhere and if it is more than this number, then some crows from outside are visiting their families here. Akbar was very happy with the answer and showered Birbal with gifts for his wit.

Moral of the story:
Sometimes you have to learn to think outside of the box.

Try to please everybody, and you will please nobody

A merchant along with his son was going to the market on a donkey to sell his wares. On their way, a man passed by them and said, “How can they be so cruel to make the donkey carry both of them.” The merchant heard this and immediately alighted from the donkey, letting his son ride on it. Soon, he came across a group of men, who commented, “See how lazy is that boy, he is letting his father walk while he is riding.” The merchant immediately asked the boy to get off the donkey, and he got on.

They would have walked no further when he saw two women saying to each other that the merchant should feel ashamed to let the boy walked in the hot sun. The merchant got confused and asked the boy to get on the donkey while they went on town.

Later, passers-by scolded them saying they were abusing the donkey by riding on it. Frustrated, both the boy and merchant got off the donkey, cut down a pole, tied the donkey’s feet to the pole, and carried it on their shoulders. Seeing this, people started laughing.

While crossing a bridge, the donkey got one of his feet loose, kicked out, forcing the boy to drop his end of the pole. In the commotion, the donkey feels over the bridge and drowned, and they tied together with its forefeet. A wise man, who was watching all this said, “Try to please everybody, and you will please nobody.”

This life lesson teaches us that even if we encounter criticism that is unfair and spiteful, we should ignore it and do things the way we deem to be correct.

True story: There are teachers, and then there are educators ...

According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington recently was faced with a unique problem. 

A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night, the maintenance man would remove them and the next day, the girls would put them back. 

Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night. To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

His friend said to him: “ You do not have to make your son work so hard. The crops would grow just as good.”
Owner of the farm replied: “I am not cultivating my crops, but my child.”

Moral of the story:
1. A simple way to groom a child is to let him experience some hardships.
2. If not cut, jade would not turn into useful ware.

After repairing the bicycle, this boy cleaned up the bicycle and it looked like a new one.
Other apprentices laughed at him for doing redundant work.
The second day after the owner claimed the bicycle back, this boy was pinched and offered a job.

Moral of the story:
1. Go the extra mile to be successful.
2. Doing more gains more. Doing less loses more.
