The purpose of this program is to create awareness of the importance of health and fitness amongst the Eye-on-the-Child Program (ECP) team and to revive their spirit. The ECP team has been asking for this program for the past two years now and the program clearly brings joy and unity amongst the team. Since they walk a lot when they work (renders a community- based child protection service), it is important for them to be updated with health tips during all seasons, also with movements that keep their knees and legs fit and their feet healthy. It is also important for them to know not to eat heavy foods before doing follow-up visits in the community.

Truly, this is not just a fitness program, but a way for the team to laugh out loud without feeling shy and a way for them to unite and enjoy themselves a little bit.

“Volunteers

Are just ordinary people with extraordinary

Hearts.

They offer the gift of their time

To teach, to listen, to help, to inspire, to build,

To grow, to learn.

They expect no pay,

Yet the value of their work knows no limit…

They know the unexpected joy

Of a simple hug.

They have planted tiny seeds of love

In countless lives.

Volunteers

Are just ordinary people

Who reach out

And take a hand

And together

Make a difference

That lasts for a lifetime.”

“Mara Adams, Social Auxiliary Worker at CWSA Delportshoop and Coordinator of the ECP volunteers, is not only the facilitator of the fitness program, but also a true role model of enthusiasm and a healthy lifestyle to the volunteers. The Provincial Office of CWSA Northern Cape is proud of Mara and her team of volunteers”, reported Christelle Hattingh, Area Manager of CWSA Northern Cape.

Prevention and early intervention

Mara Adams: "The MEC of Social Development highlighted in her speech at the Imbizo in Delportshoop, the urgency to help children realise that teen pregnancy and substance abuse are “not cool” and need to be taught the dangers and consequences of the said behaviour. We, as the Eye on the Child Program (ECP) and Child Welfare Delportshoop intend to reach that goal and to help children enjoy being just kids who want to have a brighter future.

The Grade 7 groups will be visited at school (Frances Mohapanele Primary) during their Life Orientation classes. The ECP and CWSA Delportshoop team want to make children aware of the importance of education and self-control. Children need to know a single smoke can get them hooked, one sexual intercourse might get them pregnant/infected with std’s and drinking of alcohol can take their focus off the school work. Children are influenced by older people who themselves have no intention to do something good with their lives. The learners need to look at our society not with the desires to join the ugliness of these community but with the desire to make a difference – and to be the difference. We as a team who are mainly focusing on children, have a responsibility to help these children find their purposes and God given talents and help them excel in life.

We always go out and do outreach programs to help people especially children, but mostly their beautiful smiles and innocence give us motivation to work harder to protect and help them develop their full potential. It is always a pleasure to know that we as a team are going out to the community to help a child in need and to make a difference in someone’s life."
